Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of the national examination for caregiver trainees on their knowledge of, and attitudes and behavior towards elders.

Methods: Participants in this study were 154 caregiver trainees who had completed their courses for the national examination. The measurement tool used for caregiver trainee knowledge of elders was the 41 question "Youth¡¯s attitudes toward the elderly" scale created by Sanders et al. and modified by Han. The tool used for assessing behavior towards elders was a behavior scale of 17 questions for elders developed by Won. Collected data were analyzed using independent t-test, one-way ANOVA and Pearson Correlation.

Results: Caregiver trainee knowledge of, and attitudes toward elders were found to have improved after introducing the national examination. However, the examination was shown not to have significantly enhanced the trainees¡¯ behavior toward elders.

Conclusion: The results of the research indicate that the national examination for caregivers had relationship to trainees¡¯ knowledge of and attitudes toward elders but had no impact on behavior. Therefore, it is crucial to develop appropriate programs to improve caregiver trainees¡¯ behavior toward elders in order to provide better care for elders.
